For a client in Alabama serving the oil drilling industry, Rebuilders Unlimited Inc. completed a full rebuild of a Landis 8 5/8" Receding Die Head threading and cut-off machine with a diameter capacity of 4 1/2" to 8 5/8". This machine needed to be rebuilt to meet API pipe threading standards that are used in all products for the oil and natural gas handling industries.

The threading machine's gearbox needed new bronze bushings. It is our standard practice to install Oil seals in those bushings which was not done on the original machine. A very common problem on these machines was leaky bushings after several years in service. We also replaced worn gears, worn shafts, covers, lube lines, and fittings. For the spindle and housing, we inspected all components for proper clearance and made the necessary adjustments. The air operated chucks, carriage and cross rail, chamfering tool assembly, and Receding die head were also fully inspected. We then did repair machining and components were replaced as deemed necessary to keep tolerances to a minimum factory specification and allow the customer to produce high quality parts efficiently. We installed new tooling for cutting, grooving, and reaming. We also installed a new lead screw and half nuts to ensure minimal lead error to meet API Requirements.

Other systems including the coolant plumbing system, electric motor, electrical controls and components, wiring, and clutch drive were fully rebuilt and installed, from coolant pumps, tubing, filters and nozzles, to electrical conduit, junction boxes and enclosures. We finished with industrial paint, and ran full testing and inspection operations on the completed machine.

Capabilities Applied/Processes   Gearbox:
  • New bronze bushings machined for installation of seals
  • New CR seals
  • Replace gears that are chipped broken or badly worn
  • Inspect and replace worn shafts
  • Replace damaged covers and shifter handles
  • Replace damaged lube lines and fittings
  • Upgrade hardware if necessary
Spindle and Spindle Housings:
  • Check spindle clearance
  • Remove spindle housing caps and inspect housings for wear
  • Machine and scrape in housings if necessary
  • Shim spindle caps for proper clearance
Chucks:
  • Replace operating screws if necessary
  • Replace operating screw nuts if necessary
  • Install new grips blocks
  • Install new pipe grips and pins
  • Inspect grip jaws for wear and repair or replace as necessary
  • Inspect ring gear for wear and repair or replace as necessary
Carriage and Cross Rail:
  • Machine and scape carriage ways and gibs
  • Refit and scrape in carriage to bed
  • Inspect work rest jaws and repair if necessary
  • Replace jaw operating screw and nuts
  • Install new work rest plates
  • Machine cross rail gibs
  • Shim gibs for proper clearance with work rest jaws
Cutting Off Chamfering Tool Assembly:
  • Replace cut off slide screw and nut
  • Inspect reamer lever bearing pin and replace if necessary
  • Inspect all pin, clamps, studs, nuts and replace if necessary
  • Install new cut off tool, grooving tool, cut off tool and reamer
Stationary Pipe Die Head:
  • Inspect chaser hold slides and repair if necessary
  • Inspect cam ring and retaining ring for crack or weld and repair as necessary
  • Inspect new chaser clamps if necessary
  • Inspect chaser holder slide gibs and machine if necessary
  • Install new oilers and hardware
  • Inspect worm shaft and replace if necessary
Completely rebuild lube pump and coolant pump
Install all new coolant plumbing (I.E.) valves, nozzles, tubing and filters
Rebuild or replace electric drive motor
Install new Allen Bradley electrical controls and components
Install new wiring, conduit, junction boxes and enclosures
Install new clutch drive plates
Paint and test
